Introducing Ananda Amaranath

Ananda has been practicing Law for more than 40 years.

He has for 27 years been a senior Prosecutor attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in New South Wales. During this period, he specialised in Advocacy work, particularly in serious criminal prosecutions involving personal violence including murder and sexual assault; Complex Fraud, Drug Trafficking, Motor Traffic, Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs and Apprehended Violence related matters. Ananda regularly appeared in defended hearings in summary and committal proceedings in the Local Court. He also appeared in all-grounds appeals and sentences in the District Court. He appeared for the Crown in numerous bail applications in the Supreme Court. During his career with the DPP he has appeared for the Crown in most metropolitan and country courts in New South Wales.

Professional Profile

Ananda graduated as a Bachelor of Laws and is admitted as a Solicitor and Barrister in New South Wales and as a Solicitor in England and Wales.

He has been a Senior State Counsel in the Republic of Sri Lanka and the Principal State Counsel in the Republic of Seychelles for some time. During these attachments, he conducted numerous complex criminal and civil trials before the Supreme and High Court of these countries. He was also an advisor to the respective governments of these countries.

Ananda has received referrals from legal colleagues, other law firms, and satisfied clients. He deals with matters that are emotional, sensitive and embarrassing to those involved and conducts such matters with great discretion. Over the years he has acquired a reputation for providing sensible, practical and forthright advice.

Ananda is a dedicated Lawyer who is prepared to visit prisons, police stations or hospitals to obtain instructions to ensure his client has on the spot representation. His candour and sense of humour has led to a positive relationship with the prosecution, magistrates and other judges before whom he appears.

  • Supervision of Junior State Counsel

Principal State Counsel – Seychelles

Responsibilities included:

  • Direct Management of the Civil and criminal divisions
  • Performing Barrister-at-Law functions, including advisory work, drafting and court appearances in more serious cases which came up in the original and appellate courts of the Republic.
  • Supervising junior State Counsel.
  • Provide advice to law enforcement agencies.
  • Preparation and prosecution of indictable offenders.
